Handsome Discovery Note With EPQ

Hillsborough, NH- Valley Bank $5 June 21, 1861 as G8 PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
The Valley Bank was chartered in 1860 and opened the same year. It remained in business until 1868-69 when it was succeeded by the First National Bank of Hillsborough which was chartered in December 1868 and opened in January 1869. The $5 design, printed by ABNCo, features a portrait of an attractive young woman holding a fan flanked by two large red 5 protectors. The style of this portrait is quite similar to that of a portrait titled Beaming Eyes based on a painting by Charles Baxter and engraved by Henry Cousins circa 1856. The modifications include the addition of a handheld folding fan, a head covering similar to a mantilla, and a different style dress. The engraver of the banknote portrait seen here remains unknown but the resemblance is quite compelling and suggests that this was a later adaptation of the original portrait which appeared on a $5 note of the City Bank of Poughkeepsie, NY. This is flanked by a vignette of a farmer seated with a large scythe at left and another of an allegorical woman seated by an incense burner at right. This note was signed by John G. Fuller as President less than a week before his unexpected death. This note was unknown to both Haxby and Bowers, with this likely being the discovery note. As a result, it is obviously one of the keys to the state and would be an outstanding representative for New Hampshire in any fifty state or New Hampshire / New England collection.
