Description
Watertown, NY- Jefferson County Bank $10 Jan. 1, 1857 G146a Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.The Jefferson County Bank was organized in 1816 and originally operated out of Adams, NY. The institution moved to Watertown in 1824 and continued business until 1865, when it was succeeded by the Jefferson County National Bank of Watertown, charter 1490. This visually stunning $10 Proof showcases vignettes of Ceres with a horn of plenty and other produce at left, the state banking department's die at lower right, and a small horse at lower center. The focal point of this magnificent piece, however, is the large red overprint that is featured at center, as well as the red "X" and "10" die counters at lower left and upper right respectively. Printed on India paper mounted to a Danforth Wright archives book card, this note has six punch cancellations in its signature lines. One $10 Proof of this design appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale as part of Lot 1062, a $10-$20 uncut Proof pair. That piece was likely none other than the representative in this lot, and the collecting community has seen no others since that time. Thus, this design and note could very well be unique in Proof form.
