Description

Quintessential Santa Claus Vignette

Lancaster, NH- White Mountain Bank $2 May 1, 1862 G8b PMG Fine 12.
On January 1, 1849, the White Mountain received its charter from the state, and on July 12, 1850, another charter was issued. The institution would not officially begin operations, however, until 1852. In June 1865, the bank went into receivership due to Cashier George C. Williams' impropriety being discovered. Throughout his tenure, Williams, whose signature appears at lower left on this piece, had apparently issued some $40,000 to $50,000 in excess money. Therefore, many of the lower denomination notes from this organization are obtainable. The $2 in this lot is an exception to that assertion. Representing the most sought-after denomination and design from this Lancaster concern, this deuce showcases the well-known vignette of Santa Claus racing across a rooftop as his reindeer prepare to take flight. At left, America stands next to a Native American, and at right, a passenger locomotive races underneath a bridge. A green and white "2" medallion die counter at upper left, as well as a large green and white "2-TWO-2" overprint at lower center, complete the layout. While it has seen extensive time in circulation, the note retains good body and excellent color. Most importantly, it has survived without attracting any meaningful condition impairments, a rarely achieved feat for the type. Truly an impressive Santa Claus $2, we should see a strong realization to match this piece's magnificent design.
