New.The case is virtually mint state, with traces of luster, the stamp is a tiny bit off of fully bright, and the mica has some cracks, crazes, and a small break at upper left. This is an extremely rare merchant, with only about 20 pieces known for all denominations combined. The Reed rarity rating for this number is R-8, five to ten known. Also, the Hodder-Bowers book puts the census for Pearce 3¢ pieces at, "Fewer than six known," on page 155 and we are inclined to agree. We have now offered the great piece in this lot a total of three different times. This example was won by our consignor out of our January 2006 FUN Auction.
