Description

Nearly Unique Bank of Nebraska $5 Proof

Omaha City, NE- Bank of Nebraska $5 18__ G10a Walton 3 Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64 Details.
Bank of Nebraska notes are excessively rare in Proof form. Produced by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., this example's design was only listed in the Haxby reference as a remainder, and an image of a plate note was not provided. The design of this incredible piece is quite charming, with a portrait of Mrs. B.F. Allen, wife of the first president of this institution, at right and a large red-orange "5" overprint at center which adds both color and aesthetic appeal. At left is a complex vignette of a large side profile bust of President George Washington surrounded by various allegorical figures. A soldier of the Continental Army analyzes the former general's portrait at immediate left, and Liberty clutches her pole and cap at immediate right. In the foreground, two Native Americans, one holding a spear and the other seated on a rock formation, also focus on Washington's depiction. This ornate piece is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock, and no forms of cancellation are present. We are aware of one other representative of this design in Proof form, and we offered that note in May 2024. Certified at the PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64 level, it brought $2,880. On this piece, PCGS Banknote comments on stains which are most apparent at left on the face.
