Description

Omaha City, NE- Bank of Nebraska $1 18__ G2a Walton 1 Proof PCGS Banknote Choice AU 58.
Founded by seven individuals and chartered on January 18, 1856, the Bank of Nebraska was located at the corner of 12th and Farnam Streets. The first president of the institution, Benjamin F. Allen, was also one of its founders. A portrait of his wife, Mrs. B.F. Allen, graces this scarce $1 Proof representative at lower right, and above this illustration is an elaborate "1" die counter. At left, a Native American riding on horseback attempts to spear a buffalo. The large red-orange "1" overprint located at immediate right enhances Toppan, Carpenter & Co.'s design. Printed on India paper mounted to cardstock, the note in this lot does not include any forms of cancellation. Only one other piece of this design has crossed our desk in Proof form prior to now, and we last auctioned that example in January 2024. PCGS Banknote comments on stains on our current offering.
