Description
Helena, Montana Territory - Territory of Montana $1,000 Bond Jan. 1, 1880 Very Fine.The Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Montana enacted legislation on July 21, 1879 authorizing the Territory to issue $70,000 in ten year 7% coupon bonds whose purpose was to redeem the territory's earlier 10% bonds and fund the territory's outstanding and unpaid indebtedness. Issued only in the denominations of $500 and $1,000, these new bonds were callable after January 1, 1883. This bond was printed by a local printer, the New North West Lith. Agency and features, not surprisingly, a large "open pit" mining scene at left with miners busily at work in a cut already several stories under ground level whose sides have been reinforced with timbers to prevent collapse, At top center, a passenger train steams past a group of Native Americans, both on foot and on horseback. A small eagle and shield vignette at bottom center completes the design. A large gold-colored 1000 underprint spreads across the face of the bond which has a green decorative back and fourteen of its original twenty $35 interest coupons still attached, indicating that this bond had been one of the first to be called and redeemed in 1883. The bond is signed by the Governor of the Territory, B.F. Botts as well as by the Territorial Auditor and Territorial Treasurer. The bond and its remaining coupons have been variously canceled in several ways, including POCs, hole and cut cancels and not surprisingly the large format bond has the usual file folds. Over the years we have offered two $1,000 bonds (including this example) and one $500 bond from this issue, with the other $1,000 and $500 bonds being unissued remainders. An attractive and very scarce Montana Territory fiscal instrument.
