Description
Coffeeville, MS- Joint Stock Company of Coffeeville $10 Post Note Aug. 15, 1838 Kraus 14091b PMG Very Fine 20.From newspaper notices, it appears that the company began operations in March 1838. Two months later, the company advertised that it was paying out banknotes of other banks for its post notes that were presented for payment and that it was prepared to do a limited banking business including selling bills on New Orleans and lending money "to a limited extent" on loans secured by deeds of trust on real estate. This business model did not fare well in the Panic of 1837 and December 1838 saw the company explaining that its loan portfolio had proven to be almost universally uncollectable, but that it had vigorously litigated to loans and was again prepared to pay out banknotes for its post notes. The last mention of the company is found in late January 1839 and your cataloger suspects that the company probably perished within a year or two. The note features a large vignette of an early passenger train and a framed portrait of Lafayette flanked by a TEN end panel at left and an allegorical woman seated in a four-wheeled cart. The note was printed by Western Bank Note Co. / Woodruff, Tucker & Co. who, like W.L. Ormsby, in later years, tended to be associated with marginal banknote issuers. This note is very rare, with this being the first example we have offered from this institution in any of our public auctions. As a bonus, the note is fully issued and repair-free, with no meaningful condition distractions.
