Description

Black Ink Reverse Vignette of U.S. National Gold Bank Notes of California Intaglio Print ND circa 1870 Fr. 1136-1166IV as Hessler 343 PMG Not Graded.
A second example in black ink, this desirable vignette of $211.50 in gold coins was used on the National Gold Bank Notes of California. Black ink is the color that was actually used for the vignette on the notes. Hessler recorded four of these vignettes printed in black ink on India paper and mounted to cardstock. This example has a title of Gold Back, a die number of 689, and an ABNCo imprint under the vignette. Also, penciled in the lower right corner is the not so accurate notation, "Jas. Smillie sculp. Printed yellow on the back of "Gold Notes" issued by the U.S. government." "Sculp" is an abbreviation for the Latin word sculpere, "to carve." Measurements of the card are approximately 9 by 6 inches.
