Description

Army of Mississippi, MS- H.H. Hogg, Sutler 39th Regiment 50¢ Jan. 24, 1863 Keller MS-SB050 Kraus 54871a PMG Choice Fine 15.
Based upon the date on the note (January 24, 1863), this note was for use with the second "Army of Mississippi" which was formed on December 7, 1862, by troops in the Departments of Mississippi and East Louisiana, including the Army of West Tennessee. The sole mission assigned to the Army of Mississippi was the defense of Vicksburg. With the fall of the city on July 4, 1863, the second Army of Mississippi ceased to exist when it surrendered. It seems logical to assume that the note was used in and around Vicksburg. The note features a small vignette of a lyre at top center flanked by a 50 CENTS. end panel at left and a vignette of an allegorical woman standing by a column at right. Confederate sutler notes are always popular and this marks the first offering of a 50¢ note from this sutler in one of our public auctions. PMG mentions a corner repair.
