Description
Bronze-Gold Ink Vignette Reverse of U.S. National Gold Bank Notes of California Intaglio Print ND circa 1870 Fr. 1136-1166IV as Hessler 343 PMG Not Graded. An engraving of the vignette used on the back of $5-$500 National Gold Bank Notes. The vignette in this lot is printed in bronze-gold ink instead of the black ink used on the actual backs of this class of paper money. The bonze-gold ink produces an even more stunning rendition of the design that contains $211.50 in gold coins. The vignette design is the exact size used for the back of the notes. It is printed on India paper and mounted to cardstock that measures approximately 7.5 by 4 inches. Hessler states on page 185 of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes second edition that this masterpiece design was executed by the ABNCo. The Continental BNCo printed the $5s for the National Gold Bank Notes, while the ABNCo printed the other denominations. Hessler recorded three examples in bronze (gold-bronze) ink. This vignette is without an imprint.
