Description

Worcester, MA- Worcester Bank $50 18__ G156 Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 63.
The bank was chartered in 1804 and remained in business until being succeeded by the Worcester National Bank which was chartered on May 27, 1864. The $1 design features a vignette of a shepherd resting, gazing at his charges, including one black sheep. A second vignette of an allegorical woman seated, holding a pitcher is at lower right. The note is printed on India paper with five POCs in the signature lines, mounted on archival paper. Haxby was aware of, and illustrated, this note in Proof form. It appears that the plate note is not the same as this example, suggesting a surviving population of at least two pieces. PCGS Banknote mentions a small tear whose presence is not blatantly obvious.
