HB-139 EP-178 Reed-JG30 30¢ J. Gault Extremely Fine.
A scarce 30¢ denomination example, this John Gault number has a rarity rating of R-6, 16-20 known, as found in Civil War Encased Stamps The Issues and Their Times by Fred L. Reed III. The nicely centered stamp has a little better color than what is often seen for this merchant and denomination. The mica is clear head-on, while tilting the piece exposes some crazing and the encasement has been cleaned.
