Charming Taunton Bank $20 Proof with Attractive Green Design Elements
Taunton, MA- Taunton Bank $20 Mar. 4, 186_ G104a Proof PCGS
Banknote Uncirculated 62.Part of a inherently beautiful series produced by the NBNCo for the Taunton Bank, this $20s use of an ornate green overprint at lower center with symmetrical elements was made possible by Cyrus Durand's invention of the geometric lathe in 1824. Such green design features as those which appear on this piece were employed to add color and visual appeal to the note, but they also served as a deterrent to counterfeiters who could not easily replicate the process by which they were created. At left, a sailor returns from his seafaring ventures with a knapsack, at center, choppy waters toss several sailing vessels in different directions, and at right, an unidentified male looks towards the left portion of the note in a portrait taken from life. This piece is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with five punch cancellations in the signature spaces. We have offered an example of this design and denomination just once previously. That note, which was none other than the one in this lot, crossed our desk in January 2002. More recently, a $5 Proof from this institution and series graded at the PMG 63 EPQ level and brought $4,320 in October 2021. We are likely to see our conservative estimate attained or surpassed tonight for this beauty, as it could very well be unique or nearly so.
