Description

Taunton, MA- Taunton Bank $3 18__ G62a Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64.
The bank was incorporated in 1812 and remained in business until it was succeeded by the Taunton National Bank in the spring of 1865. This $3 design is a classic example of the extraordinary work done by the National Bank Note Company in the late antebellum era. A large oval vignette The Young Students is flanked by an oval portrait of a young girl at bottom left and an oval male portrait, taken from life, at lower right. Beautifully executed borders and medallions printed in green complete the exquisite design which is printed on India paper mounted on archival paper. Six POCs are in the signature lines (India paper only). Estimates of the surviving population of Proofs range as low as only two pieces.
