Alafia, FL- Antoine Wordehoff 25¢ Aug. 26, 1862 Benice 5 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Wordehoff was one of four Prussian mercenary soldiers stationed at Fort Alafia in eastern Hillsborough County during the Seminole War. He remained after the war, opening a general store and becoming Alafia's first postmaster in 1855. Alafia later became a stagecoach stop on the Tampa-Ft. Meade route. The note features a two masted steam powered sailing vessel and was payable in current bank notes when presented in sums of $5. While the note has seen time in circulation it is completely intact with no repairs or meaningful impairments. This note served as the plate note on page 42 of the Benice Florida catalog and is one of a handful known.
