Description

Cape May C.H., NJ- Bank of America $1-$3 July 25, 1851 G2-UNL Wait UNL-UNL Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The bank was organized as a free bank in 1851 and remained in business for a short period of time before closing in 1853. This two subject sheet has a $1 and a $3 note. The $1 design features the state free banking die, a large vignette of a Native American family, and a teacher with her students flanking a shield depicting a 1, and an oval portrait of Jenny Lind. The $3 features the state free banking die, a vignette of three men talking entitled Farmer and Mechanics, and an oval male portrait. The sheet is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. This, in turn, is affixed to an original Danforth Bald archive book card. There were three sheets without overprints in Lot 930 of the 1993 ABNCo Archives sale. It is possible that one or two of them have been cut in the intervening years.
