Description

St. Paul, MN- Wallblom & Thoorsell Baseball Advertising Note ND (1887) Vlack-UNL PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
Wallblom & Thoorsell ran a furniture business at the address shown on this note circa the mid-1880s. Interestingly, J. Kershaw, who is named on this note above the firm name, is listed in the 1886 St. Paul city directory as a clerk for a competing furniture firm. The portrait on the face of this advertising note is that of A.G. Spalding, co-founder of Spalding Sporting Goods and President of the Chicago White Stockings (the modern day Chicago Cubs). A former pitcher, he was also involved in organizing the National League and even wrote the first official rules for baseball. The team players on the back are from the Chicago White Stockings. In 1887, the White Stockings finished with a record of 71-50; good for third place in the National League, 6-1/2 games out of first. PMG mentions repairs, pieces added, and tears. Having said that, the note still faces up pretty well and is certainly rare, with this being the only example we have offered from this issuer. It appears that this note is a restoration of the same damaged note that we previously auctioned in our 2009 FUN CAA Signature Currency Auction.
