Description

Montgomery, AL- Bank of Montgomery $10 18__ as G10a as Rosene 230-5 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was organized in 1852 and operated under the state's free banking laws. Its fate is uncertain but it probably did not survive the financial fallout from the Civil War. This seldom seen note features the state banking die at center flanked by a vignette of a farmer resting at left and an oval female portrait at right. A large red-orange 10 counter fills the center of the note which is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. There was a single example of this design (likely this note) in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. With no public auction appearances in recent memory the chances are good that this note is either unique or nearly so.
