Description
T5 $100 1861 PF-1 Cr. 5 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.The T5 $100 was designed and printed by the New Orleans branch of the ABNCo in the immediate aftermath of federal authorities shutting down production of Confederate notes at the New York plants of both ABNCo and National Bank Note Co. in late April 1861. The last two-subject $50-$100 sheet printed by National Bank Note Co. that was received was sent by C.G. Memminger via courier to New Orleans and served as the inspiration for the $100 and $50 designed and printed there under the banner of the "Southern Bank Note Company." This imprint was used in order to try to give the ABNCo in New York some cover from the political fallout associated with printing notes for the Confederacy. The design features pre-war vignettes of a passenger train, Justice, and Minerva that would have been available to the New Orleans branch. The design process was agonizingly slow due to the branch's very limited resources. Only 5,798 notes were issued between August 25 and September 23, 1861 before production ceased. This is a well printed note done on bright paper with vibrant colors and decent margins consistent with its assigned grade.
