Unique Experimental Lord & Taylor 1¢ Encased Postage

HB-UNL EP-UNL Reed LT01'51 Experimental 1¢ Lord & Taylor Extremely Fine.
A unique Experimental Encased Postage piece from this dry goods merchant that we thought would never cross our desk. We are so very glad that we were wrong. There are a total of two Experimentals known from Lord & Taylor, the 1¢ in this lot and a single 10¢. Both examples had only a single auction appearance between 1891-1994 according to Civil War Encased Stamps The Issuers and Their Times by Fred L. Reed, III. Also, this piece is plated on page 216 of the Reed reference, which is the only major Encased Postage reference that lists the two Lord & Taylor Experimentals. The Experimental in this lot has a Series 1851/57 1¢ Scott 5 or 6 stamp as compared to Scott 63 that was used for every other 1¢ piece that was sold by John Gault to his clientele looking for a small change/advertising issue. The Lord & Taylor Experimentals have escaped almost all of the great collectors over the years. John J. Ford, Jr. had a complete denomination Encased Postage set for Lord & Taylor, but he owned neither of the two Experimentals. The ultra rare example in this lot hails from the Dr. Robert D. Gardner Collection, who was a contributor to the Reed reference. The dark blue stamp is in top notch condition. The mica is clear in direct light except for the tiniest ding at center, while tilting the piece shows a small lamination at 11 o'clock, but there is almost next to nothing when it comes to the often seen cloudiness often associated with mica. The olive-brown encasement is rotated approximately 90 degrees and there is plenty of silvering retained on the advertising side. We have auctioned only one other Encased Postage Experimental piece that has a merchant listed. It was an Irving House, Hunt & Nash Experimental 10¢ Reed-IH10ES grading Very Fine, holed. This probably unique piece brought $3,737 in September 2007. Nearly two decades later, our current Lord & Taylor Experimental offering in a higher grade should easily eclipse that figure.
