24¢ Burnett's Cocoaine One of Two Known

HB-78 EP-163 Reed-BK24 24¢ Burnett's Cocoaine Extremely Fine.
An extremely rare Encased Postage that was lot 435 in the June 23, 2004 auction of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection. The rarity rating in Civil War Encased Stamps: The Issuers and Their Times by Fred L. Reed III is R9, with two known for this number. The Standard Catalogue of Encased Postage Stamps by Michael J. Hodder and Q. David Bowers confirms Reed's research as it is stated on page 77, "fewer than three... known." Reed also found a total of only five auction appearances between the years 1891-1994. Not a single example had been offered at auction in the decades before the Ford piece took to the auction block in 2004. This is now our first offering of the 24¢ denomination from this Boston apothecary. The 24¢ stamp shows the usual light fading for the denomination. It is nicely centered with almost the entire denomination visible save for a tiny part of the letters, "ou" in "four" at bottom center. The imperfections in the mica are best seen when tilting the piece. The right tab has a tiny dent and the encasement sports a light olive-gold color on the advertising side. We auctioned a 24¢ Joseph L. Bates Fancy Goods HB-60 EP-160a Reed-BA24F/G in About New, which is also one of only two known. It realized $24,000 in January 2023.
