Description

Boston, MA- Lafayette Bank $500 Aug. 25, 1836 G34 PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20 Details.
The Lafayette Bank began business on July 13, 1835, without having been incorporated. On April 16, 1836, the institution did incorporate, but shuttered its doors shortly afterwards in June 1837 due to inability to meet its financial obligations. During an investigation, the cashier of the bank, Dunham, was found to have emitted an amount of currency far greater than legally permissible. While many of the bank's lower denominated notes are obtainable due to their large quantities of issuance, the $500 and $1,000 examples are great rarities. Printed by the NEBNCo utilizing Perkins' Stereotype Steel Printing design, this $500 exhibits an allegorical female at center with various symbolic items surrounding her, including a cornucopia, lyre, and scythe. Several denominational die counters are present on the face at upper and lower right and left as well as flanking the central vignette. We offered this exact note in May 2003 as part of the landmark Tom Denly collection, where it realized $1,725. It is believed to be unique, and we have seen nothing in the past two decades to disprove that assertion. PCGS Banknote comments that the note has been silked. In addition, several minor edge and internal repairs are noticed.
