Description
Boston, MA- Hide & Leather Bank $5 Oct. 1, 1857 as G8a PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 63 PPQ.The bank was chartered in 1857, but due to the Panic of 1857 and the associated difficulties with raising capital, it did not open for business until April 16, 1858. After this delayed start, it remained in business until being succeeded by the National Hide & Leather Bank of Boston in 1864. The $5 design for this occupationally named bank quite naturally depicts an early tannery scene with workers busy processing hides. A large red security panel containing FIVE in white letters covers the signature lines. Printed on India paper, the note has six POCs in the signature lines. This vibrant note almost certainly was part of the single uncut sheet of four $5s appearing in Lot 690 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. This sheet was subsequently cut sometime after 2005 with the card separating from the sheet. In 2020, we auctioned the Plate A sheetmate $5 for $1,440 and expect this stunning example to test or better that price level this time around.
