Description

Boston, MA- Continental Bank $1-$1-$2-$3 Oct.__ 18__ G2a-G2a-G4a-G6a / X1 Uncut Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
Founded in 1860 by E.R. Secomb and James Swan, who became first president and first cashier, respectively, this institution was established at 238 Washington St. and operated until October 1, 1864, when it was succeeded by the Continental National Bank of Boston, charter 524. Two $1s, one $2, and one $3 are contained in this uncut sheet. The $1s each feature a portrait of Major General David Wooster at right, a Connecticut-born Revolutionary War hero who sustained fatal wounds in the Battle of Ridgefield at Danbury, CT, while attempting to repel British General William Tryon's forces. A farmer watering his horses and other livestock is located at center. At center on the deuce is a depiction of Black and White Beauties, which was adapted from a painting by LeRoy of two horses startled by an approaching thunderstorm, and at right is a portrait of President George Washington. The $3 includes likely the most fascinating vignette of all on this uncut sheet. At center, an illustration entitled Polar Bear Attack pictures four arctic explorers laboring desperately to fend off a ferocious polar bear whose snarling jaws are drawing nearer to them. Their ship awaits their return on the horizon in the distance. The vignette was engraved by De Witt Clinton Hay at the time of Henry Grinnell's expeditions in search of ill-fated explorer John Franklin and his ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which were lost in the mid-1840s to the Canadian tundra. American patriot General Joseph Warren, who was martyred at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, is depicted at right. The ABNCo has made use of aesthetically pleasing green borders and protectors across the faces of all four notes. This lovely piece displays rippling natural paper wave. A couple inconsequential stains along the margins have not been mentioned by PMG. In September 2024, we offered a nearly identical PMG 63 graded sheet which brought $3,360.
