Description
Boston, MA- Boylston Bank $10 Jan. 1, 1859 G10a PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30 Details. The bank was originally chartered in 1845 and remained in business until being succeeded by the Boylston National Bank of Boston in 1864. The $10 design features a large X flanked by portraits of Washington and allegedly Columbus (your cataloger is a bit skeptical of that attribution). A large red TEN protector is at bottom center. Round vignettes of two farmers conversing at left and a busy street scene at right complete the design. The back bears an important period annotation indicating that the descendant Boylston National Bank of Boston redeemed the note. The national bank's quarterly statement for the quarter ending September 30, 1864, shows that the bank was still carrying $23,385 in Boylston Bank state circulation as a liability on its balance sheet. Excessively rare and perhaps unique or nearly so, this note remains desirable despite PCGS Banknote mentioning evidence of previous mounting which is not overly distracting. This note appears to be the plate note in the Whitman catalog (Volume 3, page 78).
