Description
Boston, MA- Blackstone Bank $5 Aug. __, 18__ G16a Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64.The Blackstone Bank, which began operations on September 16, 1851, was located on the corner of Blackstone and Hanover Streets. By 1864, however, records show that the institution had moved to Union Street. On September 10, 1864, the Blackstone National Bank, charter 514, was established to succeed the concern represented by our current offering. A splendidly detailed Proof, this piece features an illustration of Ceres holding a cornucopia at left and a cooper working with barrels at right. The center of the note presents a bustling vignette of the Quincy Market. Named in honor of Mayor Josiah Quincy, the building was designed by Alexander Parris and constructed from 1824-26. Though restoration work has been completed since then, the structure still stands today. The ABNCo has also added a lovely green overprint at bottom center which includes a large "FIVE." The note is printed on India paper with four punch cancellations in the signature spaces. It served as the plate note in the Whitman catalog on page 72 of Volume 3. We have only offered one example of this design in Proof form previously, and that piece was none other than the representative in this lot which last crossed our desk in May 2003.
