Description

Beverly, MA- Beverly Bank $2 July 1, 1862 as G34b PCGS Banknote Very Fine 25.
The bank was incorporated in 1802 for a period of ten years and was succeeded at the end of its charter by a second identically named institution that continued in business until being succeeded by the Beverly National Bank in 1865. The $2 design features a vignette of Liberty, draped in the Stars and Stripes, reclining at the shore with an eagle and globe at left. Another vignette of two allegorical women seated with an overflowing cornucopia is at lower right. The bank title, in a seldom seen font, a large green TWO protector, and an even larger light gray 2 are at center, completing the design. This note is in the form preferred by many collectors, being fully issued in evenly circulated condition with no repairs or meaningful impairments. Genuine notes from the bank are excessively rare, with only non-genuine efforts being usually available. In fact, we have only verified the existence of two genuine notes from the bank: this $2 and a $10. This Ex: Eric P. Newman collection holding last crossed the auction block, achieving a hammer price of $3,760, just over a decade ago.
