Description

Athol, MA- Millers River Bank $20 18__ G12 Proof PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 65 PPQ.
Established in April 1854, the Millers River Bank remained open for business until 1864, when its shareholders elected to create the Millers River National Bank, charter 708. An array of delightful vignettes highlight this incredible $20 Proof produced by Danforth, Wright & Co. At left, a blacksmith, sailor, and farmer offer grain to an allegorical figure above them. The pole and cap she holds represent Liberty, while the cornucopia by which she is seated is a symbol of Plenty or Abundance. A female portrait graces the upper right portion of the note, and at lower right, a steam locomotive chugs along the tracks. We have auctioned a total of three Proofs of different denominations from this institution prior to now, with this representative being the first $20 from the bank to cross our desk. The most comparable example to our current offering of that trio, the $50, certified at the PMG 66 EPQ level, brought $1,140 in September 2020. This $20 is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with four punch cancels in the signature spaces. Before the gavel falls tonight, we should see fierce competition for this likely unique beauty.
