Description

South Carolina Promissory Note April-May 1775 £20 PMG Very Fine 20.
Only the fourth example of this note to participate in our auctions, and better yet, this is only the second piece to not be pen cancelled. This elusive issue for war expenses started out as private, but due to the notes rarity, it is believed that they were converted into later South Carolina issues. The issue is also regarded as the earliest Revolutionary War paper money for all of the thirteen colonies. The four black ink signatures are bold, while the red ink signature of Roger Smith remains readable on this piece. Also, there are no cancellation marks to interfere with any of the signatures. The tape repairs mentioned on the back label are thin, leaving a very presentable mid-grade note.
