Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $90 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
The broad face margins and natural paper surfaces of this piece only set the table for its appeal. Printed on thick, cream paper and signed by John Smyth, John Scott, and Theodore Gaillard, Jr., the $90 note from the Coram series features a dynamic back design that makes it a very popular type with all currency collectors. It features Hercules strangling the Nemean lion, a powerful, patriotic image with Britain portrayed as a lion, overwhelmed by America in a fierce struggle. The intricacy of Coram's plate engraving mastery stands apart with European craftsman from the Renaissance and beyond. The back plate details are remarkable for this period. The face vignette has a finely detailed warrior holding a spear and 13-star shield. On the ribbon below is the motto ARMISA CONCURRITE CAMPO (Assemble the field of arms). The back is wonderfully centered and registered to the face. This offering is an exemplary piece from an ever-popular colonial series.
