Description
South Carolina 1767 (Dates Handwritten) £20 PMG Good 6 Net.An important one year and denomination type for the colony. Several series were issued by South Carolina from 1750-75 in order to receive taxes or to raise money for specific projects. This is a very rare type, and only 3,000 £20 certificates were authorized. Their purpose was to help fund the Customs House and new Watch House in Charleston. This is a large format note printed uniface on laid paper. The large size and delicate paper make these rarities difficult to encounter in any grade. This note has been backed with period newspaper that only adds to its appeal. We have auctioned only one other example of this note. It graded PCGS Fine 15 Apparent and realized $3,120 in November 2017.
