Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $70 PMG About Uncirculated 50.
The Ordinance of February 8, 1779, authorized $1,000,000 in Bills of Credit, with an additional $3,000,000 provisionally approved if that sum could not be borrowed. The $70 denomination has a small vignette of Hope with an anchor on the face at bottom left and a much more dynamic and sizeable vignette of Prometheus bound and attacked by a large vulture which is signed by the engraver, Thomas Coram of Charleston. The note is well printed on bright paper with clear design details including the signatures of William Morgan, Edward Trescot, and James Bentham. PMG mentions that the note has been previously mounted.
