Description
Handsome $5 Yorktown Colonial
Continental Currency April 11, 1778 $5 PMG Choice Very Fine
35.A very good looking - and importantly, genuine - Yorktown example. This Yorktown issue is the only truly rare issue of the eleven different emissions of Continental Currency. The British printed many thousands of counterfeits of this issue, which brought about a recall of all the Yorktowns, including the genuine notes. Counterfeits were rejected at the recall, and consequently are far more common than genuine examples. The emblem shows the hand gathering food while bleeding from thorn pricks. The motto is SUSTINE VEL ABSTINE (Either survive or give up). Seen with bold signatures of E. Ryves and William Hardy, this example has good margins on all sides and the centering is balanced. Nature print on the back with imprint of "Hall and Sellers, 1778." The last couple of $5 Yorktown notes we have auctioned at this same PMG Very Fine 30 grade level realized around $2,500 each. It bears mentioning that those offerings were in 2023/24 in a less exuberant market. We expect nothing less this evening.
