Description

One of Only Two Known 1902 Tennessee Uncut Sheets

Newport, TN - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 601 The First NB Ch. # 9632 Uncut Sheet
This is a previously unreported sheet on a rare bank. We can document only one other Series 1902 sheet on the entire Volunteer state. That FNB of Smithville $5-$5-$5-$5 uncut sheet was lot 1484 in the Grinnell auction during the mid-1940's. In fact, that sheet has not been seen since a January 1973 auction appearance. The current sheet grades PMG Extremely Fine 40 with each note sporting purple rubber stamped signatures of H.C. Mantooth and J.W. Fisher. Interestingly, each note displays a faint, rubber stamped signature of a third individual in black ink on the back in the open space at left. Estimates for these types of items are always tough, but no matter what is spent tonight to bring it home, you can rest assured that if you are the underbidder, you do not want to wait another 38 years for a similar opportunity.
