Description

Kearney, NE - $20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 497 The City NB Ch. # (W)3958
Large notes only from this Kearney bank, with this boldly printed $20 Brown Back as nice as any we've seen. From its bold pen signatures to the deep chocolate brown reverse, this is a note which is certain to please even the most discerning of collectors. Despite the fact that the official state seal was adopted shortly after Nebraska entered the Union in 1867 (and totally differs in design from the seal used by Nebraska Territory), the ornate Nebraska seal found on the reverse is the Territorial seal, which was used on both Nebraska's Territorial issues as well as all of its state issue notes. The reason that the Territorial seal was retained on later issues remains unknown. The seal has at its center an unfolded parchment labeled, "The Constitution", with an American flag above. At the right is a statesman in dress clothing and a top hat, while at the left is a frontiersman with a rifle. At the top a streamer contains the motto "Popular Sovereignty", while at the bottom is the word "Progress". The overall effect is quite harmonious, and the seal is in fact considerably better designed than the later adopted state seal. PCGS About New 50.
