Description
Helena, MT - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 484 The American NB Ch. # (W)4396A high grade piece with a wonderful provenance, having once been a part of the Amon Carter, Jr. Collection. This is a rare state capital Brown Back, with this the nicest of the three Brown Backs extant from this bank and the only one to be offered at public sale during the past three decades. The Montana seal on the reverse was the only one used on state issue notes, and was based on the official Montana seal which was adopted in 1893. Pictured are the Great Falls of the Missouri River at the right, a plow and farming implements in the foreground, forests, and the sun shining over the Rocky Mountains. The motto reads Oro y Plata, Spanish for "Gold and Silver", a reference to the state's mineral wealth. Pen signed PCGS Very Fine 35, a conservative grade indeed for a note which appears far nicer in the holder.
