Description

Rare Niles, Michigan $5 First Charter

Niles, MI - $5 1875 Fr. 401 The Citizens NB Ch. # 1886
An excessively rare Michigan bank that only issued First and Second Charter notes before the receiver arrived in July of 1899. Currently, only four survivors are recorded from here--two First Charter $5s of about equal grade including this example, and two $5 Brown Backs, both with a bit more circulation than the First Charter notes. This piece, which is certainly a candidate for the finest known of the four, is a lovely note that comes with four full margins clear of the design, wonderful color, and dark pen signatures. PCGS has once again wielded its apparent club for a miniscule edge tear that affects nothing. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30, a Michigan trophy note fit for the finest of collections.
