Description
Fr. 1382 Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background. This high quality gray shield has been cut down to the edges of the original engraving. A mat has been cut to complement it and the overall effect is quite pleasing to the eye. The very top center, above the eagle, has been retouched apparently to mask out a stain. With the exception of the always faded 25¢ Second Issue Back, the notes have all retained their bright original colors. All four hand signed Third Issue notes bear the Colby-Spinner signature combination. This is one of the very few instances where we have seen a Colby-Spinner Grant-Sherman on a gray shield. They are almost always found on pink and green shields only, accounting for their rarity. This 1273SP is clearly original to this shield and it appears to be an exceptional condition example. Cut down shields generally sell at a discount, but the presence of this important Grant-Sherman note should cancel out that effect. The frame appears near contemporary although the wood back has been replaced with cardboard.
