Description

Sabine, TX- City of Sabine $250 Jan. 24, 1839 Medlar 2 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
Sabine was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublett, and it was first named Sabina City. In 1839, shortly after this excessively scarce piece was issued, the name of the city was changed to Sabine Pass. This odd denomination $250 example was intended to be a city land scrip which entitled the owner to a two thousandth part of the city. This certificate could also be exchanged for $250, which is why it was utilized as a medium of exchange. At left is an oval depiction of Liberty which resembles the front of a Seated Liberty coin, and at center is a lone star. At left of the star is a sailing vessel, and at right is a steam locomotive. This is the only representative that we have been privileged to offer of this design and denomination. In the Medlar reference on page 158, the author records this denomination as being in existence, but declares that there is "no other information available." It is likely that this piece is unique or nearly so. PCGS mentions small edge tears and splits.
