Description

Nashville, TN- Nashville Bank $100 18__ UNL Schafluetzel N-B.NB-100-4Pf Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
The bank was the first bank established in Tennessee, being chartered on November 26, 1807. It ultimately had five branches and remained, at least nominally, in business until early 1829. An October 22, 1828, notice called for a shareholders meeting for December 11, 1828, "to take into consideration the situation of the Bank, and adopt such measures as may be deemed advisable for the final close of its concerns...." Assuming this meeting occurred, it is likely that the bank began winding up its affairs in 1829. The bank was listed as "Broken" by at least one Pennsylvania newspaper on January 1, 1829. This $100 design features Liberty, receiving a Native American male, seated by an allegorical woman who is holding a book, seated by a globe. End panels contain ONE HUND at left and TENNESSEE at right. The note is printed on India paper. This note is very likely the $100 that was the top note of a four subject sheet in Lot 1809 in the 1990 ABNCo. Archives sale. This accounts for the tighter bottom margin as the other three include sheet selvage. At present we believe this is one of two examples in Proof form that are extant.
