1st Tennessee Cavalry, TN- (J.A. Mathson?) Sutler 25¢ Mar. 1863
Keller UNL Remainder PMG Choice Very Fine 35.The note in this lot was likely issued by the 1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Carter's), which was organized in November 1862. The men who comprised this regiment were from myriad counties, and some possessed prior war experience, having served on General Thomas' North Carolina Legion. Several companies played pivotal roles in the Civil War; Company C served in the Vicksburg Campaign, and at the end of the Siege of Vicksburg in July 1863, the men of this section were captured. Company K assisted in defending Savannah, GA, as Union General William Tecumseh Sherman carried out his destructive March to Sea. The overall regiment was dissolved in the spring of 1865. The sutler who issued this note was identified as J.A. Mathson from other issued examples of notes from this series. This 25¢ showcases an antebellum steam locomotive at center with a small red "25" overprint at upper right. The note is printed on notebook paper and does have lightly pencilled annotations on the back, possibly from a prior written letter of some sort. The last example of a note of any denomination that we auctioned from this scarce issuer was a 50¢ piece which graded PMG XF 40 and realized $1,320 in April 2025.
