Description

Westerly, RI- Hopkinton Bank $1 Jan. 10, 1856 G14a Durand 2443 PMG Fine 12.
The Hopkinton Bank was organized in 1851. Because of the institution's speculation in Western land, failure was inevitable, as return on investment was very little if not nonexistent. Thus, in 1857, the concern went into receivership and officially closed in 1859. This ace showcases two Native American warriors at left, farmers at work in the wheat fields at center, and a cotton plant with baskets of picked cotton nearby at right. Intricate red lathework populates the back. We have not offered an example of this design since January 2015, when a PCGS Apparent Fine 15 note brought $558. Our current offering has not acquired any significant condition detractors.
