Description

Warwick, RI- Centreville Bank $1 Jan. 1, 1861 G8a Durand 2379 PMG Very Good 10.
The Centreville Bank opened in June 1828 and shuttered its doors in June 1865 to make way for the Centreville National Bank, charter 1284. This attractive ace showcases a Native American hunter with a rifle at left, a farmer carrying sheaves of wheat along with his scythe at right, and a dog lying beside a safe and clutching a key at center. This central depiction symbolizes Fidelity. A large red ONE overprint at bottom center completes the design. We have auctioned two altered notes in the past which were designed to fool this institution, but this is the first occasion we have offered a genuine example from the bank. There is a surviving population of perhaps three to four notes of this design currently known. We will estimate conservatively and let the bidders decide what price this rarity achieves.
