Description

New York, NY- Mechanics' Bank of the City of New York $5 Nov. 20, 1862 G216b PMG Very Fine 30.
This long-lived institution opened its doors in 1810 and became the Mechanics National Bank of the City of New York, charter 1250, in 1865. This striking $5, which was engraved by Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co., showcases a well-known depiction of Archimedes with a globe at upper left. The state bank department's die is located at far left, and an arm and hammer is included at bottom center. Red "V" and "5" overprints complete the design at left and right, respectively. These overprints were added to counter unscrupulous individuals, and they made raising the denomination impossible. We have offered just one issued example of this design. That representative, which was the note in this lot, realized $720 in June 2022.
