Description
Princeton, MS- Lake Washington and Deer Creek Rail Road & Banking Company $50 18__ G10 Kraus 10493p Leggett 11 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.The predecessor to the Bank of Mississippi, this company was open from 1836-38. Its purpose was to establish a railroad between Lake Washington and Deer Creek, providing a path upon which cotton could travel from Princeton to ports along the Mississippi River. Ultimately, only a portion of this plan was completed before the project was abandoned and the charter repealed in 1839. This pretty $50 features a depiction of Justice with her scales and a caduceus at left. A portrait of George Washington rests on a nearby pillar. At right are three allegorical figures. The note is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with signature cut outs. We have not had the privilege of auctioning a $50 Proof from this concern prior to now. When reviewing the placement of various diagnostics, it can also be determined that this note was utilized by James Haxby as the plate note on page 1142 of his book United States Obsolete Bank Notes 1782-1866: Volume 2.
