Description

Lexington, MS- Bank of Lexington $1 18__ as G2 Kraus 3786p Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank had a short life, having been organized in 1837 and having its notes quoted at 15¢ to 20¢ on the dollar by December 1840. The bank was listed as "broken" in mid-1845, undoubtedly well after the fact. The $1 design features a vignette of an allegorical woman, perhaps Agriculture, seated by a frame depicting a large cotton plant. Three oval cameo-like medallion 1 counter heads complete the design. The note is printed on India paper. PMG mentions that the note has been previously mounted (likely on the original card mentioned in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale description for Lot 816) and adds the comment as-made pencil, which refers to the pencil cross-out of "No." at center. One of three examples believed to exist in Proof form at present.
