Description

Jackson, MS- State of Mississippi $20 Jan. 19, 1863 (Payable in 1864) Cr. 7b PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
Issued under the Act of January 26, 1861, this pleasing $20 features a portrait of state treasurer Colonel M.D. Haynes at left. Haynes was involved in a scandal concerning Confederate currency and tragically committed suicide behind the state capitol in November 1865. At left is a young female holding a dove, and at center is a wagon full of cotton bales being drawn by six mules. The design is finished by a bold red-orange overprint. Our most recent offering of this Criswell number was a PMG 65 EPQ example which brought $1,920 in September 2024. PMG mentions a small tear at bottom center.
