Hartford: Printed by Hudson and Goodwin. Peter Colt's typeset name crossed out and replaced by Treasurer Andrew Kingsbury. This Civil List Payment on a form "Issued by Order of the Superior Court." Signed by George Pitkin. Made out to Thomas Seymour and endorsed by him on back. Also Registered on verso by John Porter, Comptroller. Several pinholes.
Thomas Seymour (1735-1829) of Hartford, Connecticut, served in the American Revolution, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, was a member of the general assembly from 1774 to 1803, and chief justice of the county court of common pleas from 1798 to 1803. Seymour was Hartford's first mayor after its incorporation, and remained so until his resignation in 1812. At the time of his death he was "the oldest surviving graduate" of Yale College. In John Trumbull's painting, "Surrender of Burgoyne, " hanging in the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., Maj. Seymour is represented in the foreground mounted on a black charger.
