Description

Continental Loan Office in the State of New York Fourth Bill of Exchange for $12/60 Livres Tournois Payable at Paris September 17, 1779 Very Fine.
A beautiful example of this New York Loan Office Livres Tournois certificate. The first three members of this sheet would have either been redeemed or destroyed. The general style is similar to other Paris certificates. Printed on laid paper, watermarked "United States 4." This certificate displays light brown typeset titles, obligations, and denominations, with blanks for issuance across. Ornamental bordering is at the right. Issued to Wessel Van Schaick (he was a blacksmith and merchant who was an important member of the Albany Dutch Church) and countersigned by Dirck Ten Broeck for New York. Signed by Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson as the "Treas'r of Loans." Endorsed on verso with a "Pay the Contents" order from Daniel Crommelin and Sons to Wessel Van Schaick. New York certificates are much scarcer than the more commonly seen Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maryland certificates. Any item with Francis Hopkinson's autograph tends to realize a four-figure price. A really scarce Bill of Exchange that offers such a fascinating look into the early fiscal instruments of our hopeful, fledgling nation.
